Winter reading

Despite the unease that I may not be prepared, I do look forward to the winter and though I love the long nights of summer, there is an attraction to the short days to come. Definitely being out here is an exercise in being self-sufficient, and solitude is an inalienable characteristic of that. For the most part I enjoy it.

Breagha’s communication needs are minimal and easily met, and though I chat away to her as we wander through our day, it is of course mostly puppy garble.

I think there is an element of loneliness to being out here so much by yourself with no folk around, television or the corner store; chipping away at the project. I think I would re-define loneliness now as being hungry for real conversation. ...[Read More]

On our walk this morning we were both bought up short by something crashing through the bush.

That kind of thrashing around is normally followed by a bear, and whether Breagha now understands that or just registers the tone of my voice, I am not sure; either way she was instantly remarkably well behaved, and trotted back to where I was to stand guard, peeking round from behind my legs. Geology anyone?

I wish I knew more about the Rockies; I would like to be able to read and interpret the mountains; it is hard to drive that road and stare up at the expanse of rock without a hundred questions of geology, north American history, topography, wildlife and habitat flitting around in your mind. ...[Read More]
